1,400 illegal guns seized over two-year period

GARDAI have seized more than 1,400 illegal guns over a two-year period including assault rifles and automatic weapons.

A detailed list of the types of guns seized in 2010 and 2011 shows the frightening arsenal of weapons available to the State's most ruthless criminal gangs.

They include sub-machine guns and automatic weapons commonly used by armed police forces and the military.

The latest figures show that almost 300 shotguns similar to the one used to murder Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe were taken by gardai over the last two years.

The Garda Press Office said that 799 guns were seized in 2010, which fell to 737 in 2011. Assault rifles are used by the military, and licences cannot be obtained by private citizens to own the weapons.

Around 640 people are licensed to own a handgun, which includes a pistol or revolver.
