12-year sentence 'a great day' for victims of sexual abuse

THE Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) described the 12-year sentence as a "great day" for victims of child sexual abuse.

"This sends out a very good message that these people when caught will be severely punished," said chairwoman Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop.

While child pornography is illegal in Ireland, not all pornographic images of children are blocked by Ireland's internet providers where the material is hosted outside the country.

Paul Durrant of the Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland (ISPAI) told the Irish Independent it was essential that the content was destroyed at source and said money should be pumped into policing.

The Hotline.ie service – supported and funded by the ISPAI since 1999 – provides an anonymous reporting service.

DRCC operates the 24-hour national helpline 1800 778888 for victims of rape and sexual abuse.
