11,000 farmers rely on welfare

ALMOST 11,000 farmers rely on social welfare, new figures from the Department of Social Protection show.

The number of farmers on the Farm Assist social welfare scheme climbed to 10,939 at the end of April, up nearly 50pc since 2008 when it stood at 7,496. This is out of a total farming population of 84,900 full-time farmers, according to Central Statistic Office figures, and the numbers have risen slightly since last year.

Mayo, Donegal, Galway and Cork had the highest number of recipients.
