11 people arrested in garda probe into illegal money lending

A total of 11 people have been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into illegal money lending.

A number of searches were conducted this morning in the Kilrush area of Co Clare.

The searches, which began at 7am, were conducted at a number of private and business premises in the, and involved gardai from a number of units, officers from the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), and officials from Revenue, Social Protection and the local authority.

Those arrested were five men, aged between 55 and 18 years of age, and six women, aged between 49 and 20 years of age.

All those arrested are being detained at various stations in Clare, Limerick and Galway under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The investigation, which has been ongoing for several months, centres around complaints received from various individuals and is focused on persons suspected to be engaged in unlicensed money lending.
