100 protesters gather in new turf stand-off
UP TO 100 protesters took part in a stand-off with gardai at a protected bog last night, writes Caroline Crawford.
A group of turfcutters had been operating on the restricted bog in Kilimor, Co Galway, just miles from the site where a 24-hour stand-off occurred last summer.
Bog owners began to cut turf at the site early yesterday. Several planes from the National Parks and Wildlife service were in the area at the time.
As the group attempted to remove the turf from the bog they were stopped from doing so by gardai. The protesters insisted they would not leave while there was a risk that any machine could be confiscated.
