With up to 18,000 teachers currently taking to the picket line to protest about pay parity, many more students are probably still in bed.

Here are 10 things you can do to make the most of your day off:

1. Have a Harry Potter marathon

Ever wish you could have a day off to watch every Harry Potter movie from start to finish?

Well, now is your chance.

Midnight parties for the new book are to be held around the world, including at stores in Dublin and Cork

2. Study

Technically, you should be in school right now.

Do the right thing and open up the books.

3. Clean your room

It’s easy to make excuses for your room being a tip when you’re busy with school and being a social butterfly on the weekends.

Today is your opportunity to stop your mum annoying you about the pile of clothes on the floor – seize the moment

Some 31 per cent of adults living with children under the age of 18 said they have squeezed into a smaller room to give their offspring more space

4. Go shopping in Newry

A great opportunity to get some early Christmas shopping in; especially with the sterling being low.

Who knows, you may even run into some of your teachers there…

5. Practice your cooking

If you’re a Leaving Cert student, college is just around the corner.

While you can still bring the washing home to mammy on the weekends, you will unfortunately have to cook for yourself.

Don’t be the stereotypical student who lives off pasta and noodles.

Watch some Great British Bake Off reruns and be inspired.

6. Get started on your Halloween costume

Dressing up as Donald Trump for Halloween? Use today to put on your first ten layers of fake tan and find the perfect wig.

7. Go sightseeing

Never been to Glendalough, the Giants Causeway or the Cliffs of Moher? Why not use today to visit one of Ireland’s many beautiful attractions.

8. Finally start that fitness buzz you’ve been talking about

We all put off exercise now and then. Why not use today to go on that jog you’ve been talking about for ages.

Alternatively, wait until Monday like every other Irish person does.

9. Have a major Netflix binge

People would like to believe students will use the day off  to study, but in reality, the most productive decision a lot of you will make today is what new show to watch on Netflix.

Everyone has been raving about Jessica Jones, Stranger Things and Narcos, so today could be your chance to get hooked on either of them.

10. Make a study plan for Christmas exams/plan how to spend your mid-term

Use today to do up your study plan for the Christmas exams, or, alternatively, make plans with friends for your week off next week.

The options are endless!
