OLYMPIC heroine Sonia O'Sullivan has revealed her delight at having the athletics track she competed on as a teenager renamed in her honour.
"It is a great honour. I can't believe it, to be honest," she told the Irish Independent.
"It is a tremendous privilege to have the Mardyke track in my name and I want to thank everyone at UCC for this great honour."
The Cobh-born Olympic silver medallist (43) admitted she was "very humbled" after the UCC athletics track was formally named after her. The old track was destroyed by the River Lee floods in November 2009. It was refurbished at a cost of €650,000 and will now be known as the Sonia O'Sullivan athletics track.
UCC President Dr Michael Murphy said: "Sonia is an inspiration to athletes everywhere and particularly for those who will train and compete on this track."
