Robson rocks Venus to set up Serena skirmish
WORLD No 39 Laura Robson stunned an ailing Venus Williams 6-3 6-2 to move into the second round of the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome yesterday.
The British number one broke Williams six times en route to one of the biggest wins of her career and a second-round clash with Williams' sister Serena.
Ninth seed Sam Stosur advanced with a 6-2 6-3 win over Su-Wei Hsieh, while Jelena Jankovic eased past Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0.
Germany's Sabine Lisicki saw off Mallory Burdette 6-1 6-2 and there were also early wins for Melanie Oudin, Shuai Peng, Ayumi Morita and Garbine Muguruza.
In men's action, 11th seeded Marin Cilic needed only 73 minutes to see off Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev 6-4 6-2.
Albert Montanes, Ernests Gulbis and Andrey Kuznetsov also advanced with wins over Martin Klizan, Jarkko Nieminen and Xavier Malisse respectively.
Italian Potito Starace saw off Czech Radek Stepanek while Benoit Paire, Jerzy Janowicz, Fabio Fognini and Albert Ramos were also winners.
