Man and woman arrested after male mowed down and attacked

Detectives have arrested two people after a man was mowed down by a car in a targeted attack before being seriously assaulted.

The violent incident happened in the St Mary’s Park area of Limerick last week and today Gardai arrested a male and a female as part of the inquiry.

Officers at Mayorstone Garda Station are investigating the incident which happened last Wednesday, March 18 at around 1.30pm.

Gardai believe that both suspects, aged in their 30s, were driving the vehicle at different times during and after the incident.

The man remains in custody this evening while the woman has since been released without charge.

A source told Independent.ie: “The injured party has since been discharged from hospital and he is very lucky not to have been left in a critical condition.

“The row centres around a personal dispute, the injured man and those arrested are all known to each other,” the source added.

CCTV footage also captured the incident in which two men, armed with weapons, confront another man on the roadway.

A white saloon car can be seen approaching at speed and strikes the lone male who is thrown onto the windscreen of a van before hitting the ground.

However, despite lying clearly injured on the floor, he is struck at least three times by one of the armed men.

A number of people are also seen running towards the scene and as the vehicle reverses, another person is struck by the car.

A Garda spokesman said: ”On March 18, Gardaí from Mayorstone Park received a report in relation to a man who had been taken to University Hospital Limerick after he was allegedly stuck by a car and assaulted with an implement at 1.30pm. The man has since been discharged from hospital.

”Detective and uniform Gardaí from Mayorstone Park carried out an investigation and executed two search warrants at houses in Limerick city this morning, March 24. A man and a woman, both aged in their 30s, were arrested at one of the houses. They were brought to Henry Street Garda and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. As part of the investigation, two vehicle were also seized.

”The woman has since been released and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The man remains in Garda custody.

”Gardai are appealing for anyone who was in the St Mary’s Park area on March 18 between 1pm and 2pm, particularly road users with video footage, to contact Mayorstone Park Garda Station on 061-456980, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.”
