Find your shade of grey

A certain book may have given the colour grey a slightly seedy reputation these days. But forget any biases you may have (or embrace them ... ). On this page, it's all about the benefits of this versatile shade, which can be used for a sultry, smoky look or a subtle chic effect depending on the side of bed you get out of this morning.

Bourjois Effect Smoky Pencil in grey, €7.99

First the good news - this highly pigmented, creamy pencil produces a lovely, sm–udgey effect. That's also the bad news if you happen to have oily lids. Otherwise, this goes on very smoothly without any tugging.

No7 Deco Darling Eye Palette, €12.95

Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the 'Great Gatsby' may be delayed until next year, but don't worry, you can still work Daisy Buchanan's iconic '20s look with this highly affordable, not to mention gorgeous, collection of grey and silver – with bronze and gold added in for good measure. Mix and match the four soft shades for a sultry look.

Estee Lauder's Pure ColoUr Gelee Power EyeShadow in Cyber Silver, €23

I tried the blackened green shade from this collection a few weeks ago and I was very impressed with the results. Like its sibling, this dark silver-grey has a slick formulation that goes on like a gel, yet sets as if it was powder. There's a great colour payoff from this shade, which blends beautifully, boasts a metallic shimmer and lasts all day without creasing whether applied wet or dry.

Givenchy le Prisme Yeux Acoustic Quatuor In Acoustic Harmony, €50.50

Four elegant shades with just enough sparkle to pique our interest, this palette is a sophisticated, and wearable take on the current trend for dramatic, eye-catching colour on lids.

Chanel Illusion d'Ombre in Illusoire, €29

This range includes six metallic shades but Illusoire is definitely the standout. It's a stunning purplish grey with lots of festive sparkle. You could use the little brush that accompanies each pot but actually I think you get better coverage and control using your finger.

Revlon Nail Enamel in Elegant, €9

A warm beige shade that's oh-so-flattering thanks to caramel tones mixed in with a little grey. Formaldehyde and toluene-free, it offers good pigmentation with a shimmering finish. File your nails to a short half-moon shape to show it off to best effect.
