Newstalk’s latest recruit is not afraid of younger competition – but is a “little bit scared” of his move into the “unknown”.

Newstalk’s latest recruit is not afraid of younger competition – but is a “little bit scared” of his move into the “unknown”.

Speaking to his new colleague George Hook on the commercial station earlier this evening, Kenny said the opportunity to make the switch came out of nowhere.

“This opportunity came completely out of the blue and it stopped me in my tracks," he said.

“I agonised with Kathy about it for weeks and I came to the conclusion that if I don’t do it now I’ll never do it.”

The seasoned broadcaster says he feels like he “has been caught up in a tornado”.

“It’s a strange feeling after so many years but it’s probably the right time for me to do something mad and adventurous and challenging.

“I’m going to give it a good go,” he said.

The 65-year-old broadcaster described the high-profile move as the “last great spin on the roundabout”.

“I’ve done pretty much everything I can do on the radio and television within RTE and I’ve enjoyed every single day of it.”

He told Newstalk listener he is more “curious and excited” than concerned about the move from public service broadcasting to a commercial station.

His new programme, which will begin airing on September 2 next, will be “fair, impartial and balanced, but most of all one that will inform and entertain”.

“There’s no point in being worthy and dull,” he said.

In terms of practicality Pat said he would be “insane if I wasn’t a little bit scared of the leap into the unknown” but is not afraid of younger broadcasters nipping at his heels.

“I say ‘Come and get me’.

“When people think they are ready to do the job that you [George Hook] and I do, let’s hear them and let’s see them.”

The broadcaster’s ties to RTE have not being completely severed, however, as he said: “I haven’t ruled out doing television – nor have RTE ruled out.

“But I won’t be making any decisions about that in the medium term. I want to get the new show settled in and crafted first.”

Pat Kenny’s new radio show will be aired on Newstalk 106-108fm from 10am to 12.30pm starting September 2.
