Eastern promise from Venice to Farmleigh

With her legs folded oh so casually and her shoulders carelessly slumped, this woman is the picture of oriental exoticism combined with unadulterated sexuality.

She is also the centerpiece of one strand of Dublin artist Gerard Byrne's unique work made specifically for the Irish contribution to the 52nd Venice Biennale.

Bearing the rather cumbersome title of *ZAN-*T185 ... ., this is based on microfilm records of Andy Warhol's Interview magazine of the 60s and 70s. It features a series of staged interviews with a diverse range of subjects as it reconstructs conversations and interviews using actors in artificial settings.

The oriental edge is enhanced by accomplished cinematographer Chris Doyle, best known for his work with Chinese master Wong Kar Wai, and it is best described as 'a meditation on fame, artifice, acting and complicity between interviewee and interviewer'.

This film installation is being shown in an important exhibition in the Farmleigh Gallery in Phoenix Park (www.farmleigh.ie) that celebrates Ireland's inspired representation at the Venice Biennale, which demonstrated how art crosses all boundaries by including work from both ends of our island, exhibiting together for the first time at this important global exhibition.

Continuing until May, Venice at Farmleigh is also showing the second half of our representation in Venice, an extraordinary film installation by Derry artist Willie Doherty.

Tying together disparate memories and images, Ghost Story is narrated by Stephen Rea and filmed by our most internationally successful cinematographer Seamus McGarvey (Atonement, The Hours).

More important than all this celebrity involvement, though, is the fact that this is a truly beautiful work that will envelop you entirely and make you want to stay wandering down its eerily bleak country lanes.
