A man is being questioned by detectives tonight following the discovery of a female pensioner’s body in Kilkenny.

Gardai believe the body of the woman, aged in her 70s, may have at the property in the city for up to a week before being found.

The scene has been preserved following the discovery after 5pm this evening.

A male, understood to be from Kilkenny and aged in his late 20s, is currently being held at Kilkenny garda station after being arrested in relation to the incident.

Gardai at this stage are treating the death as suspicious but are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination to determine the course of the investigation. 

A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai in Kilkenny are investigating the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of a woman in her 70s, whose body was discovered in a house in Kilkenny City this evening.

The scene is currently preserved and the body of the woman remains at the scene.

“A male is currently detained in Kilkenny Garda Station in relation to this incident.

“An Garda Síochána is making no further comment at this time.”
