WATCH - Lionel Richie wants to reclaim the word 'Hello' from Adele at Rihanna's charity ball
Lionel Richie told the world he wants to reclaim the word "hello" from Adele at RIhanna's charity ball in California.
Adele's latest single Hello is a chart success but Lionel Richie wanted the world to know he sang a song by that name first.
The 66-year-old singer belted out his classic 1984 hit Hello at the 2nd Annual Diamond Ball hosted by Rihanna and her charity, The Clara Lionel Foundation (named after her grandparents) in Santa Monica, California on Thursday.
'There is a song I need to reclaim, girlfriend came along and said 'hello it's me'", Lionel said before launching into his ballad to the ecstatic crowd.
Even Rihanna made reference to the similarities between Lionel and Adele's songs when introducing the former Commodores singer at the event.
"He wrote this song Hello way before Adele was even born," the Bajan beauty said.
Celebrities such as Will and Jada Smith, actress Emily Ratajkowski and reality TV star Kylie Jenner were all in attendance at the ball.
Comedian and actor Kevin Hart was MC on the night and donated US$50,000 (€454,85) to Rihanna's charity.
"It's simple, we care about each other and we help each other and that's what I want to do for my global family too in health, education, art and culture," the 27-year-old singer said of her foundation.
And when Lionel Richie re-introduced himself to the world with a "hello" the foundation had raised US$3 million (€2.73 million),
