TV3 today confirmed plans to revamp their 5.30 news bulletin, rebranding it ‘The 5.30’.

The 5.30 news programme, long the anchor of TV3’s current affairs offering, will now be broadcast live from a specially designed new virtual set in the station’s Ballymount headquarters.

Station bosses say the new format will place an emphasis on breaking stories, live content and an increase in the number of stories covered from home and abroad.

The revamped news programme will also use cutting edge technology to break news – The Metrocam ,a device which allows cameras to broadcast live without having to plug in anywhere, will allow the programme to put stories on air as they happen.

TV3 has considerably upped its investment in current affairs programming in recent years – Vincent Browne hosts the nightly news programme while Colette Fitzpatrick anchors the topical ‘Midweek’ show.

Alan Cantwell will continue to anchor the early evening news show, as he has done since the station’s launch.
