TV Highlights Wednesday
Angels and Demons (2009)
RTE One, 9.35pm
Perhaps it helps that one's expectations were rock bottom after the fascinating car crash that was 'The Da Vinci Code', but this sequel is considerably better, and a bit of a laugh.
'Angels & Demons' condenses all of its action into a few days and fairly cracks along as Dr Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks, above) attempts to save the Vatican from a convoluted attempt to blow it up with anti-matter.
There's a secret society, sinister cardinals, and brutal ecclesiastical murders all committed against the glorious backdrop of Rome. Ayelet Zurer plays Langdon's glamorous partner, and a fine cast includes Stellan Skarsgard, Armin Mueller-Sthal and Ewan McGregor.
Surprisingly entertaining overall, the film only becomes problematic when you pause to wonder what the hell it's all about.
Carry On Doctor (1967)
Channel 4, 1.20pm
The film that coined that immortal phrase "Oohh Matron!", Gerald Thomas's unsubtle and curiously innocent hospital romp stars Sid James as a truculent patient who smokes stogies beneath his bed sheets and Hattie Jacques as the formidable matron who endeavours to keep order.
Drums Along the Mohawk (1939)
In this entertaining John Ford western, Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play a young couple who settle in Indian territory during the American revolution and are subjected to a series of Mohawk attacks formented by pro-British Tories.
Dante's Peak (1997)
Sky Movies Action, 6.10pm
Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton make a rather unlikely pairing in this competent 1990s disaster movie. Brosnan is Harry Dalton, a prominent volcanologist who can convince no one in his idyllic mountain town that a supposedly extinct nearby volcano is actually about to blow. It's red faces all around when it does.
The Guilt Trip (2013)
Sky Movies Premiere, 8.00pm
Decent performances from Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand save Anne Fletcher's comedy from total disaster. Rogen is Andrew, a brilliant inventor who soon regrets taking his mom with him when he embarks on a sales trip across middle America. With Adam Scott, Ari Graynor and Colin Hanks.
Castle Keep (1969)
In Sydney Pollack's eccentric wartime drama, a jaded aristocrat offers a group of war-weary American soldiers shelter in his ancestral castle during the bloody Battle of the Bulge in the hope that they'll defend it from the resurgent Wehrmacht. With Burt Lancaster, Peter Falk and Bruce Dern.
