TV Highlights Friday

The Bank Job (2008)

More 4, 9pm

Set in 1971, 'The Bank Job' is a very traditional London crime caper about a motley crew of likely lads who get a tip-off about a vulnerable bank vault and unwittingly enter a web of political intrigue.

Saffron Burrows plays Martine, a sometime drug courier who approaches an old flame of hers called Terry (Jason Statham, above) with a proposition. A high street bank in west London has been having problems with the alarm in its vault, which is currently deactivated. If Terry and his mates can tunnel in without anyone noticing, they'll be able to get away with a fortune.

The Bank Job could be the answer to all Terry's problems, so he and his friends rent the shop next door and start digging. Needless to say, things don't go exactly according to plan.

District 9 (2009)

RTE Two, 9pm

In Neil Blomkamp's brilliant sci-fi drama, an alien ship is stranded above Johannesburg, and its half-starved extraterrestrial inhabitants are crowded into a ghetto that eerily echoes apartheid-era black shantytowns. Sharlto Copley plays a government official who's sent in to clear the place, and Jason Cope co-stars.

The Missouri Breaks (1976)

TG4, 9.05pm

Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando come face to face in this messy but interesting 70s western about a gang of ruthless horse thieves whose reign of terror in the wilds of northern Montana is disrupted by the arrival of an enigmatic bounty killer hired by the local farmers for protection.

Casino Royale (2006)

UTV, 10.45pm

Martin Campbell's excellent 'Bond' reboot stars Daniel Craig as a young and impetuous 007, who falls in love with glamorous treasury agent Vesper Lynd as he struggles to outwit master criminal Le Chiffre in a high stakes poker game. With Judi Dench.

Moscow on the Hudson (1984)

RTE One, 11.55pm

Robin Williams adopts a dodgy Russian accent in this modestly entertaining 80s comic drama from Paul Mazursky about a Moscow circus performer on tour in America who is inspired to defect after a shopping trip in downtown Manhattan. With Elya Baskin and Cleavant Derricks.

Valhalla Rising (2009)

BBC2, 12.10am

Nicholas Winding Refn's dark and stylish fantasy is set in 1,000 AD and stars Mads Mikkelson as One Eye, a supernaturally strong warrior who escapes from the dungeons of a Norse chieftain and embarks on a perilous boat journey towards an undiscovered land. With Ewan Stewart.
