Ben Elton's new sitcom The Wright Way (BBC One), which concerns a fanatical health- and-safety inspector and his long-suffering family, is truly dire, with leaden gags and mouldy old jokes. Can this be the same man who co-wrote Blackadder?
Also new and almost as bad is Fox's latest import, Men at Work, which features four thirty-something guys who all work at the same New York magazine and all hang out together trying to put the moves on every woman they encounter.
This seems intended as a kind of male Sex and the City, which at least was smartly written. Here the repartee is just tired and unfunny, while none of the characters have the faintest degree of charm.
