Something fawlty about C4's comedy list

Good comedy is good comedy, no matter what channel has commissioned or screened it, so it was rather mean-spirited -- not to mention perverse and distorting -- of Channel 4 to confine its two-hour 30 Greatest Comedy Shows round-up to its own creations.

So no tributes, then, to Fawlty Towers or Dad's Army or The Royle Family or Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm or most of the other shows we automatically associate with the best of television comedy.

As it happened, three of the channel's chosen top four had Irishness written all over them -- Dylan Moran's Black Books, Graham Linehan's The IT Crowd and Father Ted, which Linehan co-wrote -- but that didn't excuse the programme's incestuousness.
