RTE dismisses reports of clash between Sean O’Rourke and Des Cahill
RTE have dismissed any speculation that all is not well between Sean O’Rourke’s broadcasting team and Des Cahill.
It was reported that the Sean’s team “clashed” with Cahill during the first show on Monday.
The reported “clash” occurred just moments after the show went on air, but before Cahill’s sports segment got underway.
RTE have stated that that management have not received any complaints regarding the alleged incident.
Cahill has been sports anchor on RTE’s Today show for many years.
It is understood the alleged disagreement centred on how they would segue Cahill’s segment into the show.
However, all sides are playing down the incident, with one describing it as little more than ‘first day jitters’.
Both men are seasoned broadcasters, and hugely popular and respected amongst their colleagues.
Cahill has worked on the programme for many years, alongside O’Rourke’s predecessor Pat Kenny.
Kenny is now broadcasting a new show with commercial station Newstalk and is competing directly with Sean O’Rourke on RTE.
RTE repeatedly denied there was any tension between the pair, stating that the pair were good friends.
In a statement issued yesterday, an RTE spokesperson said: “I can confirm that there was no complaint (official/non-official) made to management from either Sean O’Rourke or Des Cahill in relation to the programme ‘Today with Sean O’Rourke’.
“It is the normal style of the programme that both the presenter and the sports anchor interact with sports guests.
“Des Cahill is a part of a team presenters who are rostered across various programmes.
“Des and Sean are great friends and colleagues for over 25 years,” the statement added.
