'revenge' best served by stowe

Madeleine Stowe, a striking but underused presence on the big screen, is clearly enjoying herself as filthy-rich queen of the Hamptons in Revenge (E4), a drama series that's won plaudits and big audiences on the far side of the Atlantic, though it's hard to see why.

It stars Emily VanCamp as Emily, whose father's life was destroyed by a treacherous moneyed elite and who is now intent on destroying each of them in turn.

This could be enjoyably trashy fun were it not for the fact that the dialogue was written by people with cloth ears and that Ms VanCamp can't act for toffee. But Stowe lends it a bit of vigour with a bracing dose of haughty malevolence, though I still prefer to remember her glowing heyday in The Last of the Mohicans.
