Political drama 'Borgen' to have spin-off on radio
The hit Danish political drama 'Borgen' has provided the backdrop for a new spin-off radio series which will follow the exploits of the civil servants working behind the scenes of government.
'Borgen: Outside The Castle' will follow the character of Hans Gammelgaard, private secretary in the Ministry of the Environment, as he seeks approval for the controlled use of genetically modified crops by Danish farmers.
Starting on December 16, the BBC radio series has been made by the same team behind the popular political thriller, which started by telling the story of charismatic politician Birgitte Nyborg who unexpectedly becomes the first female prime minister of Denmark.
Set against the backdrop of the first series of 'Borgen', the radio production details the difficulties encountered by Hans, played by English actor Tim Piggott-Smith, in his quest to get the plans passed.
"He expected opposition but not from unseen enemies prepared to go to any lengths in pursuit of their own agenda," the BBC said. "Originally produced in 10 parts by DR, Denmark's national broadcaster, this radio spin-off is set against the backdrop of the first series of the TV drama."
Now in its third season which has received rave reviews, the BBC Four TV version of 'Borgen' -- named after the Danish parliament building or Christiansborg Palace -- is part of a wave of Scandinavian dramas which have proved a hit in Ireland and the UK in recent years. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
