oscars elite prove toughest audience of all

When host Seth MacFarlane told the Academy Awards audience (Sky Premiere/RTÉ Two) that the only person who'd really got inside the head of Abraham Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth, you could practically see the hostility emanating from the assembled celebs.

Part of that, you felt, had to do with the fact that the phenomenally successful MacFarlane (Family Guy and all that) was seen as an arriviste – not a Hollywood insider like Billy Crystal, who can get away with all sorts of rude remarks about his peers because, hey, he's one of them.

Indeed, I'd been hoping that MacFarlane would be even more transgressive, though some of his putdowns clearly proved too much for some of this annual love-in's stars, and I doubt if he'll be asked back.
