nigella's teasing takes a surreal twist

John Boland

In the wake of the court case alleging Nigella Lawson's cocaine habit, it was weird watching Nigelissima: An Italian-Inspired Christmas, which was first shown a couple of years back on BBC Two and was rescreened this week.

Suddenly, and no doubt unjustifiably, such innocently teasing remarks as "It's time for indulgence after all" seemed quite surreal, while there was something truly sad about her fervently expressed assertion that "I need to be surrounded by people I like" -- especially when the revellers seen partying with her were actually extras who were hired for the occasion.

Still, she's well rid of Saatchi, isn't she?
