Melanie hails TV portrait of Gerry
THE grieving partner of Gerry Ryan contacted TV3 yesterday to show her "appreciation" about a special show in which the late broadcaster gave his last television interview.
Over half a million viewers watched the programme on Wednesday night -- but a TV3 spokeswoman admitted a copy of the hour-long interview was not sent to Melanie Verwoerd beforehand.
However, a station spokeswoman said TV3 had not intended to "snub" the former South African ambassador to Ireland.
The broadcaster said Ms Verwoerd, who is now the executive director of UNICEF Ireland, had not been given a copy of the interview because she had not requested it.
However, they said she had been in contact yesterday to show her "appreciation" for the special which they said she found "touching" but most of all "portrayed the Gerry she knew and loved".
In a statement issued yesterday Ms Verwoerd added: "I was very moved by the documentary on TV3 last night, because I saw so much of the Gerry I knew and loved. A Gerry that was clever, funny, self-deprecating and generous -- even to those who had hurt him. It was heartbreaking to watch, but I hope it reminds people of the great man he was."
TV3 also confirmed they had sent an advance copy of the same programme to the Ryan family's solicitor.
