Mad Men - the cult TV series set in 'sixties New York - has landed 19 Emmy nominations. But it was pipped by period drama Mildred Pierce - starring Kate Winslet - which grabbed 21.
Mad Men now has a chance to win Best Drama for the fourth straight year.
And Modern Family, last year's top comedy series, was the most-nominated comedy with 17 nominations.
The Emmys are known as televisions's Oscars.
Other leading nominees include Martin Scorcece's Boardwalk Empire, with 18 nominations and Saturday Night Live with 16. Sex-and-swords fantasy Game of Thrones and the sitcom 30 Rock garnered 13 each.
The controversial The Kennedys, recently shown on RTE, received 10 nominations, including best miniseries.
Mad Men's Jon Hamm received his fourth lead acting nomination and Steve Carell earned a best comedy actor nod for his final season of The Office.
Former Friends star Matt LeBlanc received a lead comedy actor nomindaton for playing a screen version of himself in Episodes .
First time nominees included Mireille Enos for thriller The Killing and Timothy Olyphant for Justified .
