RTE has put the 230,000 drop in audience figures for the latest episode of 'Love/Hate' down to the bank holiday.

Sunday night's instalment, in which IRA member Dano (Jason Barry) made a dramatic exit, saw an average of 706,000 viewers tune in, compared with 936,000 the previous week.

RTE said it was not concerned about the sudden and significant drop in numbers.

"Bank holiday viewing patterns tend to differ, people being away for the weekend, or socialising. We'd expect more time-shifted viewing on this episode – people watching it in their own time before the next episode airs," an RTE spokesperson told the Irish Independent.

The latest episode, the fourth in the current season, showed Dano bleeding to death after being kneecapped by a fellow republican terrorist.

It was a surprising end for Barry's character, who thought he was about to avenge his father and put an end to the life of kingpin Nidge.
