is this a history play i see before me?

Shakespeare on television mightn't be everyone's idea of an exciting time, but BBC2's The Hollow Crown, which offered four of the history plays, was brilliantly achieved.

Part of the trick was hiring top-notch directors who knew their way around the Bard (Richard Eyre, Thea Sharrock) and part in casting terrific actors who knew how to deliver blank verse (Jeremy Irons, John Hurt, Tom Hiddleston, Ben Whishaw).

Henry V is generally regarded as the weakest of the plays, but Thea Sharrock abridged it adroitly and made it vividly cinematic, while Tom Hiddleston was the charismatic equal of Laurence Olivier and Kenneth Branagh.
