IF ANYONE CAN SPOIL THE party, then Eamon McCANN CAN
Given the week that was in it, The Insiders (RTÉ1) offered a timely glimpse at how Queen Elizabeth's 2011 visit to Ireland was organised, with lively contributions from those behind the scenes, whether in policing, diplomatic, culinary or waitressing roles.
On the following night's Prime Time (RTÉ1), Ronan Fanning gave his measured views on this week's state visit to the UK, but there was nothing measured about the response by tireless Derry socialist republican firebrand Eamon McCann, who thought royalty "gaudy and monstrous tomfoolery".
Indeed, he couldn't envisage "any ground" on which he and Prof Fanning could discuss the matter.
So why was he there? Oh, of course, it provided yet another opportunity to climb on to his soapbox. Silly me.
