PAUL Gascoigne has admitted that his return to drinking may well constitute an urge to kill himself.

Speaking in an ITV film called 'Being Paul Gascoigne' which airs tonight, the former Newcastle, Tottenham and England hero says: "At least if I die I wouldn't be in this pain all the time."

Produced and directed by Jane Preston, the film provides a heartbreaking picture of a once-adored public figure struggling to control an addictive personality. Recorded over three months, it notes his obsessional urges for sweets, tattoos, cleaning and cosmetic surgery.

His failure to control his urge for booze makes for the most challenging viewing. "What made you do it?" asks his former wife Sheryl, who witnessed his return to the bottle this summer. "Nowt," is the reply. "That's what's worrying."

Asked if he is drinking himself to death on purpose, Gascoigne said: "Yeah. But then we're all dying, aren't we?"
