Neil Patrick Harris wants a “big variety show” to be his “next big thing”.

The actor recently wrapped up his hit US TV show How I Met Your Mother. And he tells Flatt magazine he’s looking to transition to a TV hosting gig for his next act.

“The next big thing I want to do is a big variety show,” he told interviewer Stephen Colbert, PageSix reports.

“I want to be the next Ed Sullivan. That’s my game plan,” he said.

Neil made a reference to the late legendary comedian earlier this year in an interview with American shock jock Howard Stern.

The 40-year-old star revealed CBS offered him David Letterman’s job hosting The Late Show before the American comedian announced his departure. But Neil said he turned the offer down because he thought he would “get bored” of the format.

"I don't have any interest in doing 'monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest musical act, goodnight,'" Neil said.

“I was flattered that I was kind of being considered," he later told Rolling Stone. "How exciting to be considered for something like that,” Neil said, adding that he was more “keen” to follow in Ed Sullivan’s footsteps.

Neil has had success hosting TV programming in the last.

Last year, the actor presented the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. He has also served as master of ceremonies at the Tony Awards for the past three years and hosted the 2009 Emmy broadcast.

The star last year equated presenting with being a circus ringmaster.

“The Tonys is its own beast,” he told Variety. “It’s much more ringmaster, P.T. Barnum — I feel like a huckster, trying to get people to tune in, and more importantly, embrace theatre and want to go see shows. The Emmys is a different animal.”
