Downton’s Lady Mary is heartbroken following the death of her husband Matthew Crawley in the Christmas special.

But her grandmother will urge her to try and move on with her life in the new series of Downton Abbey.

Lady Mary is now bringing up their infant son, who is sole heir to the Downton Estate, as a widow.

However her grandmother urges to her grieving granddaughter to live once again.

The clip sees the dowager, played by legendary actress Maggie Smith, giving advice to heartbroken Lady Mary.

"You have a straightforward choice before you. You must choose either death or life," she tells Mary

Mary responds: "And you think that I should choose life?"

The show has been a ratings and critical smash.

It has won both a Golden Globe and Emmy award, and is the most successful British costume drama internationally in over 30 years.

The fourth series of Downton Abbey premieres on September 22nd.

No doubt, Lady Mary will find love once again as the Crawleys come back to our screen forever changed.

The third series saw the shocking death of Lady Sybil from pre-eclampsia after she gave birth to her daughter.

And Matthew Crawley died after driving home from hospital after seeing his newborn son.

Sybil’s husband, former Irish chauffer Branston (played by Dublin actor Allen Leech) is expected to find new romance in the forthcoming series.

Whether Mary will as well remains to be seen.
