Going bananas . . . teen tries to break record live on TV

Nick Bramhill

A TEENAGER will attempt to break a world record on Irish TV tonight -- for eating the most bananas in 60 seconds.

Cork student Ronan Doyle became a household name in Italy last Thursday when he equalled the world record by scoffing six bananas in a minute in front of six million viewers.

But the 19-year-old film-studies student from Douglas has been invited back to make a second attempt at becoming an outright world-beater -- by peeling and swallowing seven whole bananas on tonight's 'Saturday Night Show' on RTE One.

The banana-chomper said he first got the idea when he discovered the record at that time was "ridiculously easy to break".

"A few years ago, I found out that the record was just two bananas peeled and eaten in a minute. I thought it could be done by anybody.

"A lot of other people must have had the same idea, because the record kept going up until Robert Godfrey ate six.

"Then a few weeks ago, I got a call from the producers of the Italian programme, who said my name was still on file and they invited me over.

"I've eaten hundreds, including seven in a minute in practice."

He added: "I really feel I've got a great chance at getting my name alongside them in 'The Guinness Book of Records' this time."
