Film Highlights Wednesday

The Lucky One (2012)

RTE One, 10.10pm

Fans of novelist Nicholas Sparks will enjoy this unapologetically romantic drama, but others may find its relentless slushiness hard to take.

Zac Efron (above, with Taylor Schilling) stars as Logan Thibault, a US Marine sergeant who's on patrol in Baghdad when he finds a discarded photo of a pretty blonde woman that may have been dropped by a soldier. When he then has a series of miraculous escapes from explosions and enemy attacks, Logan becomes convinced the photo has somehow protected him, so when he returns to America he sets out to find her.

Using a lighthouse at the back of the photo as a guide, he travels to a small town in Louisiana and finds Beth Clayton, a beautiful and recently divorced vet. But not everyone is happy he's arrived. With Taylor Schilling and Blythe Danner. Mogambo (1953)

Film Four, 2.50pm

Stirring African adventure from John Ford starring Clark Gable as macho game hunter Victor Marswell, whose search for lions and so forth is rudely interrupted by the arrival of two women (Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly) who vie for his attention. Poor chap. Miss Potter (2006)

BBC4, 9pm

Children's author Beatrix Potter is revealed to have been a woman ahead of her time in this gentle biopic starring Renée Zellweger. The young Beatrix outrages Victorian mores and her own parents when she sets out for London and overcomes the cynicism of publishers to make her name.

Amistad (1997)

Sky Movies Drama, 9pm

Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, Matthew McConaughey and Djimon Hounsou head the cast of this worthy Steven Spielberg drama based on the true story of a shipload of slaves who overcame their captors and landed in US waters, where their presence led to a legal battle that called the entire slave trade into question.

Passenger 57 (1993)

3e, 10pm

In this unimaginative thriller, a criminal mastermind is being transported on a passenger jet to Los Angeles to stand trial when his gang sneaks their way on board and tries to spring him. But they have not reckoned on the interference of a dogged agent, John Cutter. With Wesley Snipes.

The Other Man (2008)

BBC1, 12.15am

Liam Neeson heads the cast of this thriller from Richard Eyre, playing a man who's devastated when his wife of 25 years suddenly disappears and turns out to have been having an affair. But when he tracks down the man who seduced her, he finds there's more to all this than meets the eye.
