Film Highlights Wednesday

Anna Karenina (2012)

Sky Movies Drama, 12.05am

Joe Wright's stylish drama uses theatrical tricks and poetic flourishes to memorably dramatise Leo Tolstoy's tragic novel. Keira Knightley (above) is Anna Karenina, a beautiful Saint Petersburg woman whose bland but not unhappy marriage to the cold politician Count Alexei Karenin (Jude Law) is fatally destabilised when she meets the dashing young army officer Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). And when Anna begins a mad affair with Vronsky, she risks everything, including her marriage and place in society.

Wright brings a real sense of motion to the story, as the sets, costumes and cinematography are fantastic, and a fine cast includes Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Macdonald, Olivia Williams, Emily Watson, Michelle Dockery and Matthew Macfadyen. But this is Ms Knightley's film to drop or carry, and overall she gives a very fine performance.

Alan Ladd stars in this Delmer Daves western as a mining engineer called Peter van Hoek who is framed for a gold robbery he didn't commit, and emerges from prison a bitter man with an elaborate plan to both gain revenge and make himself rich.

Marley and Me (2008)

Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson head the cast of this mushy family comedy based on a true story. When newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan relocate to Florida to take on new jobs, they buy a puppy who becomes a very special influence on their lives. With Kathleen Turner and Ann Dowd.

Crank (2006)

Sky Movies Action, 10.15pm

Jason Statham has a bad day at the office in this amusing thriller about a Los Angeles hitman who's injected by a rival with a singularly unpleasant poison called 'The Beijing Cocktail' that will kill him if his heartbeat dips below a certain rate. Cue a desperate race against time. With Dwight Yoakam, Carlos Sanz and Amy Smart.
