Film Highlights Wednesday

Les Miserables (2012)

HHHH

Sky Movies Drama, 5.50pm

Tom Hooper's sprawling adaptation of the hit West End show very loosely based on Victor Hugo's classic novel stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, who serves 19 years on a Napoleonic chain gang for stealing bread, but rebuilds his life after being befriended by a kindly priest, and adopts a starving orphan called Cosette.

Valjean has changed his name and become a small town mayor and pillar of the community when he comes across his former jailer and remorseless nemesis, Javert (Russell Crowe), who's now a police chief and is sure he's seen the mayor somewhere before.

At almost two hours and 40 minutes Hooper's film is bound to test the patience of some, but overall it's surprisingly enjoyable.

A fine cast includes Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried.
