Film Highlights Wednesday

A Field in England (2013)

Channel 4, 12.20am

Ben Wheatley's mesmerising and nightmarish drama is set during the English Civil War and stars Reece Shearsmith (above) as a Cavalier deserter called Whitehead who is on the run from a violent superior when he stumbles across two wandering comrades in a hedgerow adjacent to a raging battle.

One of them befriends him, and persuades Shearsmith to accompany them to a nearby alehouse that sounds positively idyllic by comparison. But it's a ruse designed to coax Whitehead into the orbit of O'Neil (Michael Smiley), a devilish Irishman who's looking for treasure in an open field and believes that Whitehead has special powers that will help him.

Shot in just 12 days for half nothing, 'A Field in England' is a unique, funny and staggeringly effective piece of work.
