Film Highlights Wednesday
Wrath of the Titans (2012)
Sky Movies Action, 9.00pm
This action fantasy based on Greek legends is a sequel of sorts to the 2010 film 'Clash of the Titans', and a cut above its disappointing predecessor.
Sam Worthington (above, with co-star Rosamund Pike) returns as Perseus, the half-human, half-divine son of Zeus, the king of the gods. In 'Clash of the Titans' Perseus became a reluctant hero after slaying the fearsome Kraken and banishing Zeus's brother Hades to the Underworld. But things get even grimmer when Hades and other gods scheme to overthrow Zeus and destroy mankind.
Sounds like a job for Perseus, and director Jonathan Liebesman manages to prevent his story being overwhelmed by the film's impressive but sometimes heavy-handed special effects. A strong cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Bill Nighy and Liam Neeson.
Cat Ballou (1965)
Channel 4, 12.15pm
Enjoyable comic western starring Jane Fonda as Cat Ballou, a young schoolteacher who travels west to Wyoming to visit her rancher father and finds him besieged by a corrupt corporation that's trying to take his land. So she decides to hire an ageing gunfighter to protect the ranch.
The Nutty Professor (1996)
Broad remake of the 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy starring Eddie Murphy as Sherman Klump, a kind but hopelessly overweight biochemist who invents a potion that turns him into a slick ladies' man in order to impress a pretty colleague.
Bruce Almighty (2003)
Tom Shadyac's reasonably amusing comedy stars Jim Carrey as Bruce Nolan, an ambitious but impatient TV news reporter who complains about God once too often and is visited by the man himself, who grants him all his power to see if he can do the job any better. With Jennifer Aniston, Morgan Freeman and Steve Carell.
Nasty thriller from Joel Schumacher about a private investigator called Tom Welles (Nicholas Cage) who is hired to find out if an apparent snuff video is real, and his search for the girl in the film leads him into the seedy world of hardcore pornography. With Joaquin Phoenix and James Gandolfini.
The Holiday (2006)
RTE One, 9.35pm
Pleasant enough romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two successful but romantically unhappy women who meet online at a home exchange website and agree to swap their homes in Surrey and Los Angeles during the Christmas break. With Jude Law and Jack Black.
