Film Highlights Tuesday
Spring Breakers (2012)
Sky Movies Premiere, 10.00pm
Harmony Korine's 'Spring Breakers' is a remarkable, challenging and deceptively complex film that divided critics and enraged some feminist commentators when it was released.
Selena Gomez, Rachel Korine, Ashley Benson and a very effective and scarcely recognisable Vanessa Hudgens play Faith, Cotty, Brit and Candy, four high school seniors who are so devastated when they find out they don't have enough money to go on a spring break vacation in Florida that they hold up a local fast food restaurant using fake guns.
That robbery, and the mindless hedonism they encounter when they reach Florida, corrode the girls' already fragile grasp on morality, and they soon find themselves in the orbit of a volatile gangster called 'Alien' (James Franco), who pushes them further down the path of criminality.
The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958)
Ingrid Bergman stars in this melodrama based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a tenacious working-class Londoner who became a Christian missionary in a remote part of central China in the early 1930s after travelling there under her own steam.
Runaway Bride (1998)
Sky Movies Comedy, 6.00pm
The 'Pretty Woman' dream team of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere were reunited for this breezy 90s romcom in which a New York columnist leaves the city to do a story on a small-town woman who's left three men waiting at the alter and has become known as the runaway bride.
Sky Living, 9.00pm
In Mike Nichols' modern take on the werewolf legends, Jack Nicholson plays a mumbling New York book editor who's a bit of a wimp until he's bitten by a wolf-like creature one night and turns into a womanising, go-gettting corporate predator. Michelle Pfeiffer and James Spader co-star.
Alexander Payne's classy comedy stars Paul Giamatti as Miles, a depressed writer who learns some hard lessons during the course of a disastrous stag week in the California wine country with his wayward best friend Jack. Thomas Haden-Church, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh, Jessica Hecht and Marylouise Burke co-star.
The Negotiator (1998)
Samuel L Jackson stars in this melodramatic thriller as a hostage negotiator who decides to take some hostages of his own in order to draw attention to the fact that he's being framed for his partner's murder. And when one of his colleagues turns up to talk him down, a battle of wills ensues.
