Film Highlights Thursday

In a World... (2013)

Sky Movies Premiere, 10.15pm

Lake Bell wrote, directs and stars in this winning comedy with an ingenious little premise. She plays Carol Solomon, the 30-year-old daughter of voiceover legend Sam Soto (Fred Melamed).

The voiceover king, Don LaFontaine has just died, and Sam and a small group of rivals are jostling for top spot and the right to do all the juicy movie trailers. But Carol also does voiceovers, and wouldn't mind doing a few movie trailers herself, but when she tries to get ahead she finds herself confronting a wall of misogyny and ignorance.

'In a World' is a very promising directorial debut, and Ms Bell does a charming job in the lead role. Her script is pretty good too, and Fred Melamed is terrific as Carol's childish and phenomenally self-absorbed father. The Bridges of Toko-Ri (1954)

Film Four, 4.40pm

Drama set during the Korean War of the 1950s and starring William Holden as a retired naval pilot who recalled to duty to take part in a daring raid on a series of bridges in North Korea that form a vital supply line for the communists. With Grace Kelly, Frederic March, Mickey Rooney and Robert Strauss. On the Waterfront (1954)

TCM, 6.55pm

Elia Kazan's grimy urban drama stars Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a not very bright ex-boxer and docker who becomes disgusted with the waterfront racket he's involved in after he meets a wholesome young woman. Eva Marie Saint and Rod Steiger co-star in this Oscar-winning movie.

Die Hard 4.0 (2007)

Film Four, 9pm

Bruce Willis proves he can still cut it as an action hero in this solid revival of the 'Die Hard' franchise. This time John McClane is up against Timothy Olyphant's hi-tech terrorist, who wants to bring America to its knees by crashing the computers that run it, in order to prove a point. With Justin Long.

Bad Teacher (2011)

RTE Two, 9.30pm

Black comedy starring Cameron Diaz as Elizabeth Halsey, a lazy, foulmouthed schoolteacher who sets out to seduce a gormless substitute teacher called Scott. When she finds out his ex-girlfriend had large breasts, Elizabeth starts scamming enough money to pay for a boob-job. With Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel.

Blazing Saddles (1974)

Sky Atlantic, 10.05pm

Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little star in Mel Brook's unsubtle but extremely funny send-up of the classic western. Little plays a black sheriff who is greeted with hostility when he takes up his post in a town, and his only friend is a washed-up gunfighter.
