Film Highlights Thursday

Pacific Rim (2013)

Sky Movies Premiere, 10pm

Guillermo del Toro's brash and breezy blockbuster is set in a near future where the Earth is threatened by an alien invasion.

In a brisk prologue we find out how a portal to another planet opened in a fissure on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, unleashing a breed of enormous, dinosaur-like monsters that are aggressive to a fault. These 'Kaiju' emerge roaring from the sea to lay waste to coastal cities all around the Pacific rim, and after conventional armory fails to stop them, mankind comes together to create a new weapon on a more appropriate scale.

Idris Elba leads a dedicated team of scientists and pilots, and Charlie Hunman and Rinko Kikuchi co-star in a film that's big on action and special effects, but pretty thin when it comes to characters and storyline.

Awakenings (1990)

Sky Movies Drama, 1.20pm

Penny Marshall's acclaimed drama stars Robin Williams as Dr Malcolm Sayer, a dedicated doctor in 1960s New York who thinks he's discovered a potential cure for the crippling disease of encephalitis when he starts treating a catatonic patient.

Crooks in Cloisters (1964)

Film Four, 4.35pm

In Jeremy Summer's old-fashioned British comedy, Carry On regulars Bernard Cribbins and Barbara Windsor are among the members of a London criminal gang who repair to a remote monastery on a Cornish island to pose as monks after pulling off a daring train robbery. With Ronald Fraser.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

UTV, 7.30pm

In the final part of the Potter film series, Voldemort has found the Elder Wand and emerges from the shadows to launch a massive attack on Hogwarts, and only Harry and his friends stand any chance of stopping him. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Alan Rickman and Ralph Fiennes star.

Solaris (1972)

TCM, 10.55pm

Steven Soderbergh's competent but unremarkable remake of Andrei Tarkovsky's science-fiction classic stars George Clooney as Dr Chris Kelvin, a clinical psychologist who's sent to a space station orbiting the planet Solaris to find out why its crew have begun behaving so strangely.

Struck by Lightning (2012)

Sky Movies Drama, 11.45pm

'Glee' star Chris Colfer stars in this dark coming-of-age drama, playing a clever teenager called Carson Phillips who's so desperate to escape the influence of his drunken mother and become a great writer that he decides to blackmail his high school classmates into helping him.
