Film Highlights Thursday

Beautiful Creatures (2013)

Sky Movies Drama, 10.00pm

Although its premise sounds suspiciously 'Twilight'-like, Richard LaGravenese's film is a surprisingly entertaining if over-long and sometimes muddled fantasy romance.

Based on a novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, LaGravenese's film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Ethan Lawson Wate, a well-read teenage resident of a narrow-minded southern Bible-belt town called Gatlin. Ethan feels oppressed by Gatlin's banality, and dreams of travelling the world in search of adventure.

But adventure comes to him in the shapely form of Lena (Alice Englert), a beautiful young stranger who joins his class at school. They start to fall in love, but Lena is actually a sorceress, and soon the couple are besieged by enemies both supernatural and human.

With Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Mann.

The Cross of Lorraine (1943)

Channel 4, 12.50pm

Wartime propaganda film that rather simplifies the French experience during the Nazi occupation. Gene Kelly, in one of his earliest screen appearances, is part of a group of French prisoners in a German Prisoner of War camp who plan an escape.

The Black Tent (1957)

Film4, 2.55pm

Absurd melodrama starring Donald Sinden as a British gentleman who travels to the Libyan desert to search for his missing brother, a captain in the Eighth Army. He never returned at the end of the war to reclaim his vast estates, and his brother finds out why when he reaches a small camp and is given a diary by a beautiful woman.

First Blood (1982)

TV3, 9.00pm

In the first and best of the Rambo films, a brooding and troubled Vietnam veteran is pushed too far by a vindictive smalltown sheriff and takes to the Rocky Mountains with an army of soldiers and policemen on his tail. With Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna, David Caruso and Chris Mulkey.

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Sky Movies Action, 9.00pm

Wry and amusing action sequel starring Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, the billionaire inventor turned superhero, who bites off more than he can chew when he takes on a mysterious high-tech terrorist called The Mandarin after he stages a series of daring attacks on American soil.

Priest (2011)

Film4, 9.00pm

Dark fantasy set in an alternate world where humankind and vampires have been at war for centuries. Paul Bettany plays one of a select band of warrior priests who flouts a ceasefire and defies the express orders of the church when he sets out to save his niece after she's kidnapped by vampires.
