Film Highlights Thursday

This is 40 (2012)

Sky Movies Premiere, 8.00pm

In this long and rambling comic drama, Judd Apatow revives two supporting characters from his 2007 hit 'Knocked Up' to give them an adventure of their own.

Pete (Paul Rudd, above) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) are about to turn 40, and while their life together seems superficially perfect, trouble is brewing behind the scenes.

They're in real danger of going broke, an employee has been stealing money from Debbie's clothes boutique and their teenage daughter is about to go postal.

Though it has the odd genuinely funny moment, and Paul Rudd is excellent as a man in the midst of a half-hearted mid-life crisis, 'This is 40' lacks the comic spark of 'Knocked Up', is way too long and rather self-indulgent.

Megan Fox, Albert Brooks and John Lithgow round out a cast of Apatow regulars.

Carry On Constable (1960)

Channel 4, 12.25pm

Sid James makes his 'Carry On' debut in this 1960 comedy, playing a world-weary London police sergeant who tries and fails to teach a group of recruits how to be law enforcers. With Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, Charles Hawtrey and Shirley Eaton.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

Sky Movies Action, 2.20pm

Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana and Ewan McGregor star in Ridley Scott's action drama based on the events of the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, when an US military attempt to parachute into the Somalian capital and capture a warlord's top lieutenants went disastrously wrong.

Mr Woodcock (2008)

Sky Movies Comedy, 9.50pm

In this low-brow but intermittently amusing comedy, Seann William Scott plays John, a young man who's finally overcome the traumas of childhood obesity and bullying by his sadistic gym teacher, Mr Woodcock, when he returns home to visit his mother and discovers to his horror that she's dating his tormentor. With Billy Bob Thornton.

Babylon AD (2008)

Film4, 11.05pm

Vin Diesel stars in this stylish but vapid sci-fi thriller from Mathieu Kassovitz about a mercenary in a decidedly grim near future who's hired to escort a mysterious woman from Russia to America across the Bering Straits, little realisng that his charge is genetically modified and hugely valuable.

Tribute (2009)

RTE One, 12.50am

In this film full of sad ironies, the late Brittany Murphy plays Cilla McGowan, a former child star who moves into her grandmother's farmhouse with the intention of restoring it. But she's soon troubled by vivid dreams about her grandparent, a famous actress who died of a supposed overdose.
