Film Highlights Sunday

Let Me In (2010)

BBC2, 10.25pm

Matt Reeves' Hollywood remake of Tomas Alfredson's acclaimed 2009 Swedish horror film 'Let the Right One In' may have been controversial in some quarters, but it's a very competent and stylish piece of work.

Reeves has transplanted novelist John Ajvide Lindquist's story to Los Alamos, New Mexico in the early 1980s, where a 12-year-old boy called Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee, above with Chloe Grace Moretz) is struggling at home and at school. His parents are in the middle of a messy divorce, and he's subjected to constant bullying at school, but Owen's life is changed forever when a strange girl called Abby (Moretz) moves in next door.

Reeves' aesthetic is suitably austere, and there are some fine performances, in particular from Chloe Grace Moretz and Richard Jenkins, who plays Abby's sinister associate.

27 Dresses (2008)

Channel 4, 3.30pm

Katherine Heigl stars in this fluffy comedy about a girl called Jane Nichols who's possibly a bit too good at being a bridesmaid. So peerless are her skills that she's been asked to perform the role 27 times, as evidenced by the 27 foul dresses she keeps as mementoes -- but true love is about to find her.

Twister (1996)

RTE Two, 9.00pm

Jan de Bont's decent 1996 thriller stars Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as an estranged couple who are on the point of divorcing when they join forces to test a new early warning system for tornadoes. Cary Elwes plays the bad guy and Lois Smith co-stars.

Fast Five (2011)

Channel 4, 9.00pm

In this stylish action caper that's perhaps the best of the 'Fast and Furious' franchise, Dom Toretto and his gang of car thieves travel to Rio de Janeiro where they dodge the law and local hoodlums as they attempt to pull off a hugely ambitious heist. With Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster and the late Paul Walker.

Knight and Day (2010)

RTE One, 9.30pm

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz star in this contrived but surprisingly entertaining action thriller. Diaz is an ordinary gal on the way to her sister's wedding in Boston when she bumps into a charming stranger who turns out to be a rogue FBI agent with the whole world on his tail. With Paul Dano.

White Elephant (2012)

BBC4, 11.00pm

Pablo Trapero's outstanding drama is set in a notorious Buenos Aires slum and stars Ricardo Darin as Father Julian, a commited priest whose efforts to help his desperate parishioners are hampered by corruption, crime and the indifference of his clerical superiors. Jeremie Renier stars.
