Film Highlights Sunday

Ryan's Daughter (1970)

RTE Two, 2.15pm

When David Lean came to Ireland to begin shooting 'Ryan's Daughter', his reputation was still riding high on the back of triumphs like 'Doctor Zhivago' and 'Lawrence of Arabia'.

Filmed along the Dingle Peninsula, Lean's film was intended to be an update of Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary' set in Ireland around 1916. The shoot went famously over time and budget, and was plagued by rows and affairs involving the director, his writer Robert Bolt, Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles.

When the film was released in 1970 it was savaged by the critics, and Lean withdrew from public life in high dudgeon. But while dramatically ropey in parts and featuring more than a few dodgy Irish accents, 'Ryan's Daughter' is beautiful to look at and features some truly spectacular sequences.

Maid in Manhattan (2002)

Channel 4, 1.55pm

Watchable romantic comedy based on the Cinderella story, starring Jennifer Lopez as Marisa Ventura, a poor single mother who works as a maid in a posh Manhattan hotel. One night she meets a dashing millionaire who thinks she's a guest at the hotel, and things soon get out of hand.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Sky Movies Action, 5.15pm

In the last of Christopher Nolan's acclaimed superhero yarns, Batman has been exiled from Gotham after being blamed for the death of Harvey Dent, but returns to save the city when a masked lunatic called Bane arrives in town. With Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman.

Regarding Henry (1991)

Sky Movies Drama, 8.00pm

Mike Nichols' urban morality tale stars Harrison Ford as a ruthless and narcissistic New York lawyer who undergoes a profound personality change after being shot in the head during a convenience store robbery and begins to realise he never liked himself very much in the first place.

Pale Rider (1985)

TCM, 9.00pm

Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this atmospheric western that echoes his earlier film, 'High Plains Drifter'. He plays a mysterious stranger who rides into the camp of a group of poor miners who are being victimised by a ruthless local landowner and offers them protection. Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgrass co-star.

After the Sunset (2004)

Film4, 11.15pm

In a rare outing as a villain, Pierce Brosnan heads the cast of this farfetched thriller playing Max, a master thief who pulls off one last big score and retires to an island paradise. But a relentless FBI agent decides to pursue him. With Woody Harrelson.
