Film Highlights Saturday

The Hole (2009)

RTE Two, 9.30pm

Readers of a certain age will have a special place in their hearts for Joe Dante, who in the early 1980s brought a playful wit to the sci-fi and horror genres with films like 'Gremlins,' 'Innerspace' and 'The Howling.' He's back to somewhere near his best with 'The Hole,' a clever little thriller that seems a throwback to a gentler kind of horror film.

When teenage brothers Dane and Lucas move from the bright lights of Brooklyn to a new town with their mother, they're none too happy about it. But they're quickly distracted when they discover a heavily padlocked trapdoor in their basement. When they prise it open they soon wish they hadn't, because inside is a bottomless pit from which their worst fears crawl forth to terrify them.

With Haley Bennett, Bruce Dern, Quinn Lord, Mark Pawson and Teri Polo.

Robots (2005)

UTV, 3.55pm

Robin Williams, Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry and Mel Brooks provide the voices for this computer-animated children's film about a young robot called Rodney Copperbottom, who travels to Robot City to meet his idol, the legendary inventor Bigweld, and finds adventure and intrigue instead.

But he finds himself increasingly torn between his posh new friends and his working class roots. With Rebecca Hall.
