Film Highlights Monday

Jack Reacher (2012)

HHH

Sky Movies Action, 9.00pm

Daft but very enjoyable action caper based on the novels of Lee Child and starring Tom Cruise (above) as Jack Reacher, an ex-military policeman with a 'Judge Dredd' approach to crime and punishment.

When a lone sniper opens up on a busy Pittsburgh street and kills five innocent passers-by, police apprehend the man they think did it, a former army sharpshooter called James Barr. He refuses to talk but demands to see Jack Reacher, who turns up out of nowhere and begins an investigation of his own.

And though he's initially convinced of Barr's guilt, Reacher soon begins to become suspicious about a crime scene that seems too perfect. Rosamund Pike and Richard Jenkins co-star in a film that's strong on action and has a winning sense of humour.

Bye Bye Birdie (1963)

HHH

BBC2, 12.25pm

Breezy early 60s musical starring Dick Van Dyke as Albert Peterson, a failed smalltown songwriter who invents an elaborate publicity stunt to get the rock star Conrad Birdie to sing one of his songs on television.

HHHH

Film4, 4.30pm

In this classic adventure fantasy, Sinbad and his men set out to find Aladdin's Lamp and save his fiancee after she's shrunk by an evil wizard called Barani. Kerwin Matthews, Kathryn Grant, Richard Eyer and Alec Mango star, but the ingenious special effects of Ray Harryhausen steal the show.

When the Griswolds take part in a gameshow called 'Pig in a Poke' they somehow win an all-expenses-paid trip to Europe, where their staggering ignorance of foreign customs and traditions soon lands them in all sorts of trouble. Comedy, starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo.
