Film Highlights Monday

Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013)

Sky Movies Premiere, 8.00pm

Director J.J. Abram's breathlessly paced sci-fi adventure takes up where his brilliant 2009 'Star Trek' reboot left off. Kirk and Spock are still snapping at each other like an old married couple, and really fall out when a botched mission to a primitive planet sees Jim demoted and his rival promoted.

Hostilities must be suspended when a mysterious villain called John Harrison begins attacking Star Fleet bases on Earth and seems to have a grudge against absolutely everybody. But only after they've tracked him to a remote corner of the planet Klingon do Harrison's real intentions become clear.

Benedict Cumberbatch (above) is perfect as the baddie, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are excellent again as Spock and Kirk, and the film's effects really do the story justice.

Great Expectations (1946)

More4, 11.00am

In probably the best ever Dickensian adaptation, David Lean masterfully recounts the writer's sweeping novel about an orphaned blacksmith's apprentice whose life is transformed when he is taken under the wing of a wealthy but mysterious benefactor. With John Mills and Finlay Currie.

The Ipcress File (1965)

BBC4, 9.00pm

In his first outing as Len Deighton's spy Harry Palmer, Michael Caine stars in this thriller set in the dark days of the Cold War. When a scientist is abducted, Palmer is called in to get to the bottom of a sinister plot, but soon finds that his superiors have been economical with the truth.

Charlie Bartlett (2007)

RTE Two, 12.15am

There are echoes of 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' to this likeable comic drama starring Anton Yelchin as Charlie, a resourceful young high school student who dreams of becoming the most popular boy in class and hits upon selling drugs as a way of achieving his ambition. With Robert Downey Jr.

A Mighty Heart (2007)

RTE One, 12.35am

Michael Winterbottom's gritty drama is based on the true story of Mariane Pearl, a Frenchwoman whose journalist husband was kidnapped in Pakistan in 2002, after which she showed incredible resolve and determination as she campaigned to have him released. With Angelina Jolie, Will Patton, Dan Futterman and Archie Panjabi.

The Godfather Part III (1990)

In the final part of Francis Ford Coppola's Mafia saga, Michael Corleone is wracked with guilt about his many crimes, and attempts to atone by throwing money around and becoming more deeply involved in the church. But old enemies are circling. Al Pacino, Diane Keaton and Andy Garcia star.
