Film Highlights Friday

Julie & Julia (2009)

BBC2, 11.05pm

Little known outside the US, Julia Childs was a cultural institution in America, a large and hearty TV chef and author who is credited with bringing classic French cuisine to America. And in 'Julie & Julia' Meryl Streep does a brilliant job of bringing her to life.

Amy Adams is Julie Powell, a blogger in present-day Brooklyn who sets out to cook every recipe in Julia Childs' iconic debut cookbook, 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking'. And as she does she is inspired by episodes in Childs' eventful life in Paris in the late 1940s.

The late Nora Ephron's film is a little bit messy at times, but Streep is great value for money, as is co-star Stanley Tucci who plays Julia's husband Paul.

With Jane Lynch, Chris Messina, Helen Carey and Linda Emond.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra (2009)

RTE Two, 9.00pm

Bizarre, ill-advised action adventure based on the popular children's toy and starring Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans as members of an elite group of US soldiers who set out to rescue a terrifying new weapon from the hands of a terrorist.

Max Payne (2008)

E4, 9.00pm

Slick action thriller based on a popular video game and starring Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne, a furious New York cold case detective who breaks all the rules in his search to find the man who killed his family.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966)

TG4, 9.05pm

Though it was attacked at the time of its release for its depictions of violence, Sergio Leone's epic western has since been hailed as a masterpiece of sorts – and so it is. As the American Civil War rages around them, three ne'er do wells race to find a cache of gold buried in a cemetery. Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef star.

The Last Castle (2001)

BBC1, 11.20pm

There are echoes of Robert Redford's 1982 film 'Brubaker' in this tough prison drama in which Redford plays a disgraced US general who's sent to a maximum security army prison after he directly disobeys a presidential order. The place is brutally run by a megalomaniac colonel (James Gandolfini), and the two men soon come to blows.

Maid in Manhattan (2002)

RTE One, 12.00am

Watchable romantic comedy based on the 'Cinderella' story and starring Jennifer Lopez as Marisa, a single mother who works as a maid in a hotel. One night she meets a dashing millionaire who thinks she's a guest, and things soon get out of hand.
