Film Highlights 130114

300 (2006)

UTV, 11.40pm

Zack Snyder scored a huge box office hit with this stylised and visually spectacular account of the Battle of Thermopylae based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller.

Gerard Butler (above) is the Spartan King Leonidas, who is faced with a terrible dilemma when emissaries of Persian King Xerxes' 100,000-strong army arrive at his city gates demanding his instant surrender. But surrender is not the Spartan way, and Leonidas decides to lead his warrior nation into a hopeless battle where his 300 men face off against the vastly superior Persian force and block their passage through a narrow mountain pass that would allow them to overrun all of Greece.

Though flashy and violent, the film's retelling of the most famous land stand in history is very entertaining, and Dominic West and Vincent Regan co-star.

The Green Berets (1968)

TCM, 3.00pm

The Vietnam War as seen through the gung-ho right wing goggles of John Wayne, who co-directs and stars in this heavy-handed action film about a veteran US colonel who leads a group of Green Berets on a mission to kidnap a key Viet Cong leader. With David Janssen, Aldo Ray and Jim Hutton.

Jesse James (1939)

Film Four, 4.50pm

Tyrone Power and a young Henry Fonda star in this entertaining but wildly inaccurate account of the life of outlaw Jesse James, who formed a criminal gang with his brother Frank and became a much feared legend in the Missouri backwoods.

Anaconda (1997)

Sky Movies Action, 9.00pm

Jokey cult action film starring Jon Voight as a Paraguayan adventurer who kidnaps a National Geographic film crew and forces them to help him trap and catch a giant snake that's been spotted in the Amazonian rainforests. Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz and Jonathan Hyde co-star.

Brubaker (1980)

TG4, 9.30pm

Robert Redford stars in this gripping drama as a mysterious and silent prisoner who arrives at a notoriously corrupt and brutal southern American prison and, after witnessing the institution's rampant cruelty, reveals himself to be its new governor. But he faces all sorts of obstacles when he attempts to reform it. With Morgan Freeman.

Dark Shadows (2012)

Sky Movies Comedy, 9.30pm

Tim Burton's gothic drama is based on a cult 1960s TV melodrama and stars Johnny Depp as a 17th century vampire who emerges from his grave in the 1970s to find his once noble family in disarray and fallen on hard times. With Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloe Moretz.
